Suspected Impaired Driver Behind Tuesday Evening Fatal Accident: News Near Smyrna

A 21-year-old Marietta man is being held without bond at the Cobb County jail after police say he was under the influence of drugs when he caused a head-on collision in Marietta late Tuesday.

Quantae L. Adams was behind the wheel of a black 2014 Chevrolet Camaro which spun out and crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic of Windy Hill Road near Jean Court at approximately 10:11 p.m., Cobb County police spokesman Dana Pierce said.
The Camaro, which was originally traveling southbound, crashed head-on into a maroon 2002 Pontiac Montana which was heading northbound on Windy Hill Road. Adams and his passengers John Benjamin Daniel Harris Jr., 22, of Annapolis, MD, and Derrick Souffrant, 24, of Uniondale, NY, were transported to WellStar South Cobb Hospital. Harris later died of his injuries, Pierce said.

The occupants of the Pontiac, 36-year-old Bernardo Alvarez and his wife and child, were taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Pierce said.
Cobb County jail records show that Adams has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, first degree homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, driving on a suspended license, giving a false name to police, and failure to maintain his lane.
Cobb County police’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is continuing to investigate the fatal crash. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact (770) 499-3987.
