Cobb Had 2,211 Layoffs in June

Cobb County recorded 2,211 layoffs in June, according to a new jobs report released today.

The Georgia Department of Labor found that 2,211 people filed new unemployment insurance claims in Douglas County in June. That number stood at 2,396 last month and 2,406 this time last year.

Across Georgia, initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits declined from May to June. The decreases came mostly in manufacturing, construction, trade, administrative and support services, health care and social assistance, and professional, scientific and technical services, according to the Department of Labor. 

While initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits decreased, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 8.3 percent in May to 8.6 percent in June.

"The rate increased primarily because of two factors that occur this time of year," State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a statement. "A large number of education workers are unemployed during the summer and new graduates are considered unemployed until they find a job."
