Garrett Middle School Teacher Dismissed
Schonell Burroughs was fired for failure to report possible child abuse.
The Cobb Board of Education has terminated a Garrett Middle School teacher, but the vote was far from unanimous.
The board voted 4-3 Thursday to uphold the recommendation of a school system disciplinary tribunal to dismiss Burroughs for failing to report possible child abuse.
Votin in favor of termination were board members Scott Sweeney, Alison Bartlett, Tim Stultz and Kathleen Angelucci.

Voting against the firing were board members David Morgan, David Banks and Lynnda Eagle.
The board discussed few details of the case during its brief consideration of the matter. Eagle said that while "a wrong has been done" and "discipline needs to follow," she suggested a 45-day suspension without pay.

State law requires educational personnel to report allegations of child abuse within 24 hours of being informed.
