MARIETTA, GA -- The Cobb school board rejected a plan Thursday night that would have required parents at Pebblebrook High to be more involved with their kids’ education if the student wanted to participate in sports and other activities.

The idea, proposed by school board member David Morgan, was voted down 5-2, reports 11Alive.

Morgan said the policy would improve students’ academic performance, while opponents say it will punish poorer families.

Pebblebrook High is located in Mableton, and has been an under-performing school for years.

If it had been approved, the proposal would be metro Atlanta’s first program that prevents students from playing sports and getting involved in other activities because of their parents’ lack of participation.

Parent/teacher conferences would also have beenΒ mandatory under the proposal.
