This time next year, about 1,000 students will engage in learning inside the classrooms of Mabletonβs new Clay-Harmony Leland Elementary School. The Cobb Schools Board of Education voted Thursday to approve the name of the new replacement school for the current Clay Elementary School and Harmony Leland Elementary School, which are celebrating their final year.
Construction of the state-of-the-art facility is expected to wrap up in time for Clay-Harmony Leland Elementary School to welcome its first class of students in Fall 2020. The communityβs excitement for the new school, which is located in the heart of Mableton, really began to build with the schoolβs ceremonial groundbreaking earlier this year.

βThe naming of the new school takes us another step closer to the day when we can cut the ribbon on a remarkably-modern school that will carry on the legacy of the original Clay and Harmony Leland elementary schools. Iβm excited for what the future holds for the community,β said Board Chair David Chastain.
School Board Gives Thumbs Up to $780,322 State Grant for Elementary Schools
School Board members also voted to approve the Georgia Department of Educationβs 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Award of $780,322. The grant will support after-school academic and enrichment programs at four elementary schools.
The award provides $319,228 for Baker Elementary Schoolβs βReach for the Stars Innovation Academy,β which will support more than 150 students in 2nd through fifth grades. The program will provide homework support, academic and culturally-enriched activities, and literacy development opportunities for families.
Big Shanty Intermediate School and Kennesaw Elementary School will use $220,474 in grant funds for the βReach for the Stars Leadership Academy." About 100 K-5 students in the program will focus on math, science, reading, writing, and technology-centered hands-on activities that will engage students. Some of the project-based learning classes offered will include culinary arts, STEAM, music, arts, and more.
At Riverside Primary School, the $240,620 grant funds will enable about 100 students to participate in βBuilding Bridges for Early Success.β This grant addresses boosting achievement in core academic subjects such as reading and math while offering a broad array of enrichment opportunities for families, reading, language arts, and science.
Before the Board members discussed and voted on agenda items, the Board members thanked the Cobb Schools Transportation Department for their commitment to student safety as part of National School Bus Safety Week and Bus Driver Appreciation Week. The Board also congratulated the Transportation team for earning the top Public Transportation Safety Award in Georgia.
