Congratulations are assuredly in order. To my opponent, thank you again for presenting a formidable challenge. Though we both have committed to representing our community with compassion and care, pioneering this monumental effort will undoubtedly take many hands- as this does make light but impactful work.
At this moment I would like to thank my We Thrive family. Not only did you come to the polls but you came to my side to fight for your rights! You have shown without a doubt how powerful an empowered community can be. You have strategized with me, walked the streets alongside me, knocked on doors and encouraged each other to not only a be a part of this movement but to be the movement! Thank you for your bravery in the midst of evictions, challenges, family displacement, financial obligations and job losses. For seeing this vision and championing this mission , congratulations are absolutely in order.
Last but not least I want to take this moment to do something that I often insist others do, but rarely have time to do myself. This means show a little- or a lot of self care. What I have endured during this race is not limited or unusual to what other tenants have faced or are facing - eviction, home insecurity, lack of proper funds, shouldering the bulk of parental responsibility not to mention traffic and the like.
While I show some self care, please do not take this moment for slight. We have a great opportunity to highlight these areas that are most significant to not only our community’s trajectory as we move into unchartered territory- literally but our identity ultimately. Who are we?
