Gwinnett Officer Killed In Line Of Duty Shooting; 2nd Injured

Two officers were shot while responding to a fraud call at a Gwinnett County hotel, and one of them has died, police said.

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA — An officer is dead, and another is injured, after a man is accused of shooting them while they were responding to a fraud call Sunday at a Stone Mountain hotel, Gwinnett County Police said.

The two officers were called about a suspected credit card theft around 7:30 a.m. to the 1700 block of East Park Place Boulevard, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Sunday.

This was after a South Carolina resident reported to police that their credit card was fraudulently being used at the local hotel, the GBI said.

When officers arrived, a front desk manager told them the room was rented to Kevin Andrews, 35, of Decatur, the GBI said.

Officers went to Andrews' room, where they spoke with him about the credit card, the GBI said. They then determined a warrant for failure to appear out of DeKalb County was active against Andrews, authorities said.

When they attempted to arrest him, the GBI said Andrews pulled out a handgun and shot at the officers, hitting both of them.

The officers then shot back, injuring the man, police said.

Both officers and Andrews were taken to a local hospital, but authorities said Police Officer Senior Pradeep Tamang died of his injuries.

The second officer, who police identified as Master Police Officer David M. Reed, was in critical but stable condition, police said. His condition was unknown Monday.

Andrews suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting and will be taken to the Gwinnett County Jail after being released from the hospital, police said.

The GBI said Andrews is facing charges of malice murder, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault upon a public safety officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felony.

After joining the GCPD in July 2024, police said Tamang graduated from the 121st Police Academy in May 2025. Reed has been with the department since September 2015 and graduated from the 94th Police Academy, authorities said.

"The Gwinnett County Police Department appreciates the outpouring of support we have received from our community. This is not a situation any department ever wants to face, and we are truly grateful for the prayers, kind words, and encouragement during this difficult time," police said in a statement published to Facebook on Monday.

"We continue to ask for prayers for Master Police Officer David M. Reed as he recovers from his injuries. We want the community to know that the Gwinnett County Police Department remains committed to serving and protecting the residents of Gwinnett County. The marked patrol vehicle of Police Officer Senior Pradeep Tamang, Badge #2741, has been placed outside Gwinnett County Police Headquarters for anyone who would like to come by and pay their respects."

The Gwinnett County Police Foundation is collecting donations to benefit Tamang and Reed's families.
