Lithonia Man Killed In Shooting With Police ID'd: GBI

According to the GBI, the man was shooting at officers who were responding to a homicide call Monday night.

LITHONIA, GA — A man was shot and killed by police while an officer had minor injuries in a shooting Monday night, the GBI said Tuesday.

DeKalb County officers were responding around 8:30 p.m. to a homicide call in the area of Cedar Croft Court, where they saw a man armed with a rifle less than a mile away from a gas station, the GBI said.

The man is accused of shooting at the officers, causing damage to several patrol cars and a civilian's car, the GBI said. DeKalb officers shot back at the man, and he died at the scene, the GBI said.

The GBI identified the man as Lerelle Chatman, 23, of Lithonia.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office for review, the GBI said.

This is the 106th shooting involving police that the GBI has been asked to investigate this year.
