A Valentine's Day Celebration

Mountain Park First Baptist Church employs a special community outreach program that deserves applause. One, the Silver Sneakers program is similar to those found in other venues. The other is an open-arms program that offers exercise to all who feel the need. No strings attached; the welcome mat is out.

On occasions like Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the church members and those in the community who come to work up a sweat, join in a celebratory feast. More specifically, a brunch.

This Valentine’s Day was the first feast of the year. We gathered mid-morning for fellowship, fun, food and prayer: staples of a solid church mission focused on bettering the greater community.

Susan Romano heads the Wellness Center and it’s programs. Under her dynamic leadership, it has evolved into a model program. Beyond the immeasurable benefits of physical exercise, knitting, quilting and wholesome camaraderie flourish. On occasion, there are noon lectures.

A former Florida State University cheerleader, Nicole Mares, a bundle of energy and effervescence, leads exercise classes, earning raves from participants.

This Valentine’s celebration featured dishes brought by many people. Chicken, roast beef sliders, cole slaw, fresh vegetables, lovely congealed salads were a prelude to an array of desserts. A delicious strawberry pound cake must have been prepared by an angel.

The weather has been challenging lately with almost endless rains followed by cold snaps. Staying at home fuels loneliness and despair. Being with people, surrounded by laughter, sharing small talk is a balm in Gilead, a recipe for happiness. Factor in exercise for even more blessings.

Love was in the air as we enjoyed the treasures from many kitchens.

The spiritual bedrock of a community is its churches. In this area of greater Atlanta, Mountain Park First Baptist Church radiates those essentials that make life better any time of the year.
