Dogwoods are blooming, weather is warm and people are ready to get out and about – spring is full of festivals in Atlanta. DeKalb County boasts a few, as well, so Tucker residents don’t have to travel far for fun this season.
Here’s a sampling of what’s going on around town.
The Dogwood Festival

There’s so much going on that a scheduling conflict is sure to arise, as is the case here. The ever-popular Dogwood Festival returns for its 75th year this weekend, same time as the Sweetwater 420 Fest. It is possible to enjoy both, so don’t dismay.
Highlights include four stages of music; comedy and an impressive artists market; a cultural show and pageant; food and wine and even a nine-story ferris wheel.

Sweetwater 420 Fest
It’s that time again, beer lovers. Sweetwater’s 420Fest returns to Candler Park this weekend, Apr. 15 – 17, with an improved musical lineup – including more stages – vendors of all varieties and shorter beer lines (we can only hope).
There’s a comedy tent, endless artists and on Sunday, attendees can take part in a cask ale tasting from 2 – 5 p.m.
Oakhurst Jazz Nights at Scottish Rite
Enjoy candlelit live music every Thursday in April during Oakhurst Jazz Nights. The shows take place in the historic Scottish Rite courtyard. Bring your blankets – lawn chairs are not allowed – and your children to these fun events.
These lovely concerts make excellent mid-week date nights, too.
Decatur Green Fest
Be sure to take part in the Decatur Green Fest this May – still a bit away, so there’s time to mark the calendar. Festival highlights include live music, organic tastings, a light bulb exchange, artists using recycled materials and cold Terrapin brews.
Have fun and promote ecological awareness on May 7 from 3 – 9:30 p.m. on the Decatur Courthouse Square, and keep up with the event on Facebook.
We don’t want to forget some of the bigger festivals slated for this spring.
Decatur Arts Festival
The Decatur Arts Festival’s artist market takes place over Memorial Day weekend, but the event offers activities to enjoy throughout the month.
From the website: “This month-long celebration of the arts kicks off with the Poster Unveiling on Thursday, May 5 and culminates with the closing of the Fine Arts Exhibition Sunday, June 5. Every event is free and open to the public!”
Atlanta Film Festival
From April 28 – May 7, people can take in the Atlanta Film Festival. Check out “101 Reasons to Go.”
Here’s a little bit about the organization: “Now in its fourth decade, the Atlanta Film Festival—one of only two-dozen Academy Award® qualifying festivals in the U.S.—is the area’s preeminent celebration of cinema. It is the largest and longest-running festival in the region, welcoming an audience of over 25,000 to discover 150+ new independent, international, animated, documentary, and short films, selected from 1,800+ submissions from all over the world.”
With so many festivals and outdoor events taking place in and around Atlanta, there’s no reason to stay at home this spring!
