Include Your Pets in Emergency Preparedness Planning, FREE Pet Adoptions and Our DeKalb County Animal Services Pets of the Week!

How to prepare your pet for an emergency or natural disaster, free pet adoptions at DeKalb County Animal Services and our Pets of the Week.

September is National Preparedness Month, and many people create plans to use in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. However, people often forget their pets when creating their plans.

It’s important to include your pets, since you could become separated from them and have a hard time finding them. During Hurricane Katrina, nearly 250,000 pets were left behind when people fled New Orleans. To increase the chances of a happy reunion, make sure you license your pet. This inexpensive and simple registration process improves the chances of a happy reunion if you become separated from your pet.

DeKalb County Animal Services (DCAS) online licensing site allows anyone to search for pet by tag number, making it easy for a neighbor to find the pet’s owner. Additionally, prepare a pet emergency kit. Include extra food, bottled water, toys, medical records and pictures of your pet. These simple steps can help ensure that your beloved pet is as prepared for an emergency as you are.

DCAS has an amazing, first-time promotion going on this month. For the whole month of September, our ‘Fall in Love’ promotion allows you to adopt any dog, puppy, cat or kitten for FREE! You’ll receive your new family member, along with $200 worth of services (spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip and more) at no cost! All adopters will still be screened to ensure the animals are going to great homes.
