Park Springs Hosts Alzheimer's Awareness Event on September 26

Event highlights journey of Atlanta native, Coach Frank Broyles and his family through Alzheimer's; advice and guidance for caregivers

In advance of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National Caregiver Month in November, Park Springs, Atlanta’s premier continuing care retirement community, is hosting an invitation-only event on September 26 that will focus on families and caregivers dealing with Alzheimer’s, featuring speakers with The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation / CareGivers United. Park Springs Members and staff will also present a significant fundraising check to the Atlanta Alzheimer’s Association.

Legendary Coach Frank Broyles was the Athletic Director at the University of Arkansas for fifty years. When his wife Barbara developed Alzheimer’s disease, Frank, along with his daughter Betsy Broyles Arnold and granddaughter Molly Arnold Gay, helped Barbara through the multiple stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

At the Park Springs event, Betsy and Molly will speak about their family’s journey and discuss the Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers.

Coach Broyles, who served as the head football coach at the University of Missouri in 1957 and at the University of Arkansas from 1958 to 1976, was Arkansas’ athletic director from 1974 until his retirement on December 31, 2007. A 1983 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame, Broyles was once again honored by the National Football Foundation in 2000 as the recipient of the John L. Toner Award, and in June 2008, Broyles was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Coach Broyles lost his beloved wife in 2004, but decided to turn his family’s adversity into positive energy in his desire to help other caregivers. He produced Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers, which has since been distributed to millions of caregivers throughout the U.S.

In 2009, The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation / CareGivers United began operating as a non-profit organization which not only manages distribution of the Playbook, but offers seminars in caregiving throughout the country, conducted by the three generations of Broyles family members involved in Barbara’s care.

This outreach is Coach Broyles’ passion:

To provide the much-needed information found in the Caregivers’ Playbook to families and eldercare organizations that are striving to provide compassionate care to sufferers of Alzheimer’s.

Park Springs Fundraising Success

During the special event on September 26, Park Springs will also present a significant check to Larrica Hubbard, Metro Development Coordinator with the Alzheimer’s Association in Atlanta. Throughout the year, Members and employees of Park Springs have participated in a variety of fundraising events to show the support of the entire Park Springs retirement community to this organization, the world leader in Alzheimer’s research, care and support, dedicated to finding prevention methods, treatments - and an eventual cure for the disease.
