Sunday Alcohol Sales: Where Do You Go?

Today, May 6, marks the day many local residents have been waiting for: the ability to buy beer, wine and whatever else you fancy in Tucker and the rest of unincorporated DeKalb County.

One small problem. No less than three of Tucker's package stores have closed down within the past few months, leaving a dearth of retail locations in the area for booze shopping.

The first to go was the Embry Hills Bottle Shop, one of the best in the area with a large inventory and competitive prices. It shut its doors abruptly last winter. The reason? A dispute over rent.

Next up was , on Lawrenceville Highway across the street from . A domestic altercation involving the owner's family was the cause, allegedly resulting in a homicide.

Third on the list is Jack's Package Store. A discarded cigarette in a waste basket on the night of April 9. Owner Natesh Patel said at the time he would re-open eventually, but Patch has since learned that was not covered by fire insurance, which makes it unlikely.

"Jack's apparently is going to be permanently closed," former employee Chris Fuller said this week. "I was told that no, they had no insurance."
