Delta Community Credit Union Expands College Scholarship Program

While tuition at public and private colleges continues to rise, grant aid for students stalled in 2011-12, according to two recent reports by the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center.  With costs rising and access to financial aid dwindling, the need for scholarships is increasingly pertinent for students striving to graduate from college debt free.  To assist these students in their quest for higher education, Delta Community Credit Union, Georgia’s largest credit union, announces a call for entries for its annual Delta Community Credit Union Scholarship program.

The Delta Community Scholarship is based on academic achievement, community involvement and submission of an essay on a topic selected by the credit union. All applicants must be enrolled at an accredited college or university during the fall of the 2013-2014 academic year as a full time student. New to the scholarship program this year, students pursuing their first undergraduate or postgraduate degree are eligible, opening up the scholarship to members of all ages.

“Delta Community Credit Union takes pride in investing in the lives of students, whether they are attending college for the first time or choosing to return to school for postgraduate studies,” explains Hank Halter, interim president and CEO of Delta Community. “With the Delta Community Scholarship, we can impact these college students by helping their financial lives come together and assisting them as they further their education.”

According to USA Today, the average tuition for four years at a public university climbed 15 percent between 2008 and 2010, with increases of 40 percent or more at universities in states like Georgia, Arizona and California.  The Delta Community Scholarship, now in its eighth year, assists students by awarding three $5,000 and two $2,500 scholarships. Applications must be received by the close of business on Monday, April 1, 2013 and winners will be notified and announced on or before May 10, 2013.
