Cherokee Schools Class Of 2019 Outscores State, Nation On SAT

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — Cherokee County School District’s Class of 2019 topped State and National averages on the SAT, according to results released Tuesday by the College Board.

The CCSD Class of 2019 earned an average total score of 1115 on the curriculum-based, college entrance and placement exam – the most commonly recognized measure of achievement for high school students. The score exceeds the National public school average by 76 points and the State by 67 points, outscoring both by wider margins than the previous year.

“Our mission is educating our emerging generation, and part of that preparation for future success is ensuring academic excellence,” Superintendent of Schools Brian Hightower said. “These results show dedication and diligence on the part of our students and teachers and the families and partners that support them. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement.”

The SAT measures critical reading and mathematics abilities related to successful performance in college. It includes two 800-point sections: Evidence Based Reading & Writing (ERW) and Mathematics, with a possible total score of 1600; a third section, a writing exam, is optional. The CCSD average ERW score is 566, and the Math is 549.

All CCSD high schools topped National and State averages on the exam; their scores are: Cherokee, 1093 (557 ERW, 536 Math); Creekview, 1127 (569 ERW, 559 Math); Etowah, 1128 – the highest average in CCSD (573 ERW, 555 Math); River Ridge, 1108 (566 ERW, 541 Math); Sequoyah, 1116 (571 ERW, 545 Math); and Woodstock, 1116 (562 ERW, 553 Math).

For the second year in a row, Georgia public-school students outperformed their counterparts in the nation's public schools on the SAT, recording a mean score of 1048, nine points higher than the mean for U.S. public schools.

Georgia outperformed the nation's public schools by nine points in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and performed on par with their national counterparts in math.

The state's public-school students did experience slight decreases in scores, which mirrored similar decreases nationally.

Georgia's SAT participation rose to 67 percent of public-school graduates in the class of 2019, up from 66 percent in 2018 and 59 percent in 2017.
