Woodstock, GA -- In what is normally referred to as the battle of Towne Lake, students at Etowah and Woodstock high schools came together last week not as rivals, but as a community to take on a larger issue.

Cameron Shockey, a senior at Etowah High School, hosted a fundraiser to help families at both schools who are battling cancer.

The fundraiser was conducted as part of the student’s senior project.

Specifically, the money raised will assist families with their financial needs. The fundraiser, held Friday, Jan. 29, raised $7,764, said Etowah teacher Rebecca Schwartz. Schwartz said organizers are still collecting money related to T-shirt sales for the initiative, and the final number should be updated within the next few weeks.

The fundraiser included a head-shaving contest, which involved members of administration and faculty at both schools volunteering for the bold move.

Anyone who was unable to attend Friday’s event can still make a donation to the cause through the Etowah Foundation.

“Cancer affects so many families in the Towne Lake area, but they should not have to go through their fight alone,” the school said. “This is our chance as a community to join together and make a difference because together love prevails.”
