Roughing It: An Evening with Mark Twain

Nationally acclaimed actor Kurt Sutton will return to Woodstock on April 21st as the great American humorist and author Mark Twain.

"This is a rare opportunity to enjoy one of America’s great treasures as he speaks, sings, plays guitar and banjo and shows you what Twain was really like in his parlor entertaining friends and family," said Artistic Director G. Lora Grooms, "Mr. Sutton performs as Twain all over the country and we're so fortunate to have him here in town."
Grooms and Sutton first discovered each other back in 2008 when Elm Street (then the Towne Lake Arts Center) was preparing to do The Big Read featuring "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer."  Sutton did many free solo performances for Cherokee Schools in March of 2009 as well as appearing as Twain in the play of "Tom Sawyer."

"We worked together on the play," said Sutton, "with Twain opening the show holding a copy of the book and introducing scenes and characters.  I even got to play Muff Potter when he was in jail and Tom and Huck came to visit Muff."   They have continued to work together as Sutton does Big Read performances across the country and often performs in Grooms' stage adaptation of "Tom Sawyer" as well.

"Roughing It" brings Sutton back to Woodstock with an updated one man show.  Sutton says, "In his youth Mark Twain found himself adrift as a tenderfoot in the Wild West – working as a civil servant, gold prospector, and reporter; trying his luck at anything and everything. This show is a hilarious account of his adventures in buffalo hunts, mining camps, and on the lecture circuit."

Tickets to the show held at City Center in Woodstock (8534 Main St) on April 21st are $9-11 in advance online or $11-14 at the door.   Just go to www.elmstreetarts.org or for group sales call 678-494-4251.
