First Baptist Woodstock Observing Weekend Of Prayer Over Students

Gov. Brian Kemp has proclaimed the weekend of Aug. 11 will be a time of prayer over students and educators.

WOODSTOCK, GA — Gov. Brian Kemp has made an official proclamation that the weekend of Aug. 11 will be a time of prayer over students and educators. On Sunday, Aug. 11, First Baptist Church Woodstock will honor the Weekend of Prayer Over Students and Educators by praying for students and educators in both morning services.

First Baptist Church Woodstock is inviting county students and educators to attend at either 9:30 a.m. or 11 a.m., FBCW Project Manager Missy Reedy said.

Kemp and family, Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan and family, State School Superintendent Richard Woods, and Cherokee County School Superintendent Brian Hightower will be in attendance in both services.

Every year, the church takes up an offering during its Vacation Bible School to help a need in the community, Reedy said.

"This year the money given by the children was designated as the 'Feed A Friend' offering in order to purchase breakfast and lunch for every student at Woodstock Elementary and Little River Elementary from a low income family who is eligible for the reduced rate. Our Senior Adult ministry heard about what the children were doing and wanted to join in. Their generosity allowed us to add Arnold Mill, Hickory Flat and Johnston Elementary Schools to our list for a total of five local schools. 'Feed A Friend' will allow every child at these five schools who are eligible for the reduced breakfast/lunch program to not have to be concerned about payment this year. Their meals are completely paid for in advance."

A check will be presented to Hightower during the worship services on Sunday.

Kemp's proclamation says Georgia students are an investment into the future of the state.

"When our student succeed, our state succeeds," it reads. "As Georgia's most valuable resources, students are not immune to challenge throughout their academic careers. Through students' struggles, educators are present to encourage students to strive for greatness and discourage them from succumbing to negative influence."

The proclamation continues by saying educators recognize that students are the future of the state and help students to become productive members of society.

"Georgians are encouraged to pray, in accordance with their own faith and consciences, for the protection and guidance of our students and educators," it reads. "A steadfast commitment to unity in prayer over our Georgia students and educators will allow citizens of the state of Georgia to give thanks and recognize the gift of education and its contribution to the advancement of our society."
