Former Sequoyah Football Player Arrested in Statesboro

A Georgia Southern football player who played at Sequoyah High was arrested by Statesboro Police for his involvement in an altercation on Feb. 9.

According to Statesboro Police, Dominique Shawn Swope, 20, was charged with aggravated battery after an investigation pointed to him as being responsible for the “serious head trauma” suffered by Cameron Zaquan Lewis. Police said Swope participated in the altercation at the Cambridge at Southern apartment complex in Statesboro.

Swope turned himself into the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.

According to the press release:

The investigation began on 2/9/2014 at approximately 3:15pm when Statesboro Police Officers responded to East Georgia Regional Medical Center in reference to Lewis being brought to the hospital by friends.  The case was turned over to Detective Sergeant James Winskey who, through further investigation, identified Swope as the offender.  Swope is being charged with Aggravated Battery.

Swope is a fullback on the Georgia Southern football team. He was the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2011.
As a prep player, he was an honorable mention all-state player at Sequoyah High School in Cherokee County, lettering two years, before transferring to Buford.
