Seventh-grade reading teacher Amy Loiselle recently created “Saving Fred” and the “Cup Stack Challenge” lessons through which students creatively solve tasks by working together.
She plans to use additional similar lessons throughout the school year to encourage students to communicate, cooperate and practice time management skills. Through the “Saving Fred” challenge, students used the scientific method to rescue Fred (a gummy worm candy) from his capsized boat by using four paper clips to put a life vest (a gummy ring candy) on him without touching him, the boat or the life vest with their hands.

For the “Cup Stack Challenge,” students used a rubber band with four strings attached as a tool to stack 10 cups in a pyramid shape.
