Johnston Elementary School on Tuesday dedicated its new walking track, which was made possible through community support.

The Joe. E Johnston Walking Track was funded with donations from the Joe E. Johnston Foundation, Johnston ES PTA, Service League of Cherokee County and Cherokee County Educational Foundation.

The track already is being put to good use for students; and in August, the PTA held its kickoff fundraiser, “The Jaguar Jog,” on the track, and students ran a total of 3,070 laps (767 miles).

Principal Amy Graham led the ceremony, which also honored former Principal Kathleen Chandler, who now is at Bascomb Elementary School, for her vision to build the track.

“Not only do we want to have students with healthy minds, we want them to have healthy bodies as well,” Graham said.

The track is named in honor of the late Joseph E. Johnston, whose family foundation made a significant contribution toward its construction.

“Mr. Joe,” as he was known in the community, lived a busy life of civic service until his death in 1978. He served as a state legislator, was active in the operation and management of the J.H. Johnston Company and related businesses including the Rope Mill, the Bank of Woodstock and Woodstock Oil and Fertilizer Company.

Johnston was a charter member of Rotary Club of Canton and Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce and served on the Bank of Canton Board of Directors for many years.

“The Johnston family has been so influential in our community, and we appreciate all the support over the past three decades,” Principal Graham said.
