Large Animal Team Rescues 2 Horses in Cherokee
The team, organized by Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, responded to one call in Woodstock and another near Canton.
WOODSTOCK, GA -- Members of the Cherokee County's Large Animal Rescue Team had their work cut out for them Wednesday, as the crew spent the better part of the day coming to the aid of two horses.
The first call came around 7:30 a.m. at a home in the 800 block of Ranchwood Trail in unincorporated Woodstock of a "horse being down," Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services said in a press release.
Special Operations Chief Darrell Mitchell said the team was able to place straps underneath the animal and raise him back up.

The next call came less than two hours later at 9 a.m. from a home in the 300 block of Russell King Lane, which sits of S.R. 140 across from Northside Cherokee Boulevard near Canton.
Team members arrived at the home to find a brown quarter horse lying on the ground. According to reports from the scene, the horse had been down for roughly 20 hours and recently gave birth to a foal, Cherokee fire said.

The team brought in an A-frame to lift the horse up on all-fours. Once they were able to get the horse up, they gave it some time to regain its strength. However, once they removed the harness and began to walk the horse around, the animal stumbled and fell back down.
The rescue team placed the horse back in the harness to repeat the procedure. Unfortunately, as she was being led back to the barn, the horse collapsed again.
The horse, Cherokee County fire notes, "is not walking on her own at this time and is being looked at by a vet."
"Team members placed her on a tarp and put her in the barn where the vet continues to look after her after we left the scene," the agency added.
