Operation Safe Ride Offers Alternative To Drunk Driving

The Woodstock Police Department will offer free rides home to anyone who indulges a little too much on New Year's Eve.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- If you party a little too hard in Woodstock on New Year’s Eve, the Woodstock Police Department wants to ensure you get home safely.

That’s why the agency will once again conduct Operation Safe Ride this year. On New Year’s Eve, Woodstock police officers will provide free rides home to patrons at local bars “who may be impaired or feel that they are unsafe to drive,” the agency said.

Any resident who needs a ride must be at an establishment in the city limits of Woodstock, must live within a reasonable distance to the city and must not have money to call for a taxi.

Neese Towing will also join in the initiative this year, and will offer to tow vehicles to homes free of charge.

In its seventh year, this operation has provided over 300 rides home and has saved numerous. The Department utilizes its 15-passenger van and two police officers to drive people home.

“The main reason for this operation is to ensure that residents can celebrate the holiday, but not endanger the lives of others by driving impaired,” said Captain Kevin Culpepper, Field Operations Division commander. “The officers enjoy interacting with all of the residents and meeting new people. It is a way for us to get out in the community while making the streets of Woodstock safer” Captain Culpepper adds.
