Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a call around 11:30 a.m. April 21 of a truck that had gone into the lake from a boat ramp at Payne Campground on Kellogg Creek Road.

Cherokee County firefighters arrived on scene and discovered the truck nearly submerged into the lake.

Cherokee Fire Captain Frankie Martinez stated a man and woman arrived at the campground to enjoy a day of boating.

The female driver of the truck began to back the boat and trailer down the ramp and into the water. Once the male companion gave the driver the all clear, "she proceeded to step on the gas, not realizing the truck was still in reverse," Cherokee County fire said.

Both the truck and the trailer went into the water. Fortunately, the motorist was able to escape from the driver's side window and return to land without any injuries.

Martinez also stated that the owner of the truck purchased the vehicle about three weeks ago, the agency added.

The Cherokee County Dive Team was dispatched to the scene to locate the truck and secure a cable to the vehicle so a wrecker service could pull the truck out of Lake Allatoona.

The truck was subsequently pulled to shore around 1:30 p.m., and the boat ramp reopened to the public soon after the ordeal.
