Woodstock Accepting Applications For Citizens Public Safety Academy

The academy gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at the Woodstock Police and Fire departments.

The city of Woodstock Citizens’ Public Safety Academy will soon get underway, and residents are encouraged to sign up for the informative series of classes.

From Sept. 3 to Nov. 12, the academy will meet once a week for 10 weeks between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at Magnolia Hall in downtown Woodstock.

The Citizens’ Public Safety Academy is an important component of the Woodstock Police and Fire departments’ community engagement philosophy.

It serves as an opportunity for residents to develop a basic understanding of how both agencies function to serve its citizens.

Throughout the Academy, various personnel will cover a variety of law enforcement and fire safety subjects. Each session covers a variety of subjects, ranging from basic operations and each department’s role in the community to discussions and demonstrations.

The curriculum for the upcoming Academy includes:

  • Week 1: Welcome night with Police Chief Cal Moss and Fire Chief Dave Soumas
  • Week 2: Police criminal investigations presentation
  • Week 3: Fire station tour and operations
  • Week 4: Police traffic unit presentation
  • Week 5: Fire response to accident presentation/demonstration
  • Week 6: Safe Kids, Burn Foundation & Public Safety Foundation
  • Week 7: School police operations
  • Week 8: Fire thermal imaging/high angle demonstrations
  • Week 9: Police K-9 Unit presentation
  • Week 10: Firing range tour
  • Week 11: Graduation

Upon successful completion of the Citizens’ Public Safety Academy, each participant and their family and friends will be invited to attend the citizens’ academy graduation ceremony held at the Chambers at City Center.

Academy enrollment is limited, and application forms are available to download here or at the Woodstock Police Department.

Completed applications can be turned in to the Woodstock Police Department, which is located 12453 Highway 92.

In the weeks prior to the citizens’ academy start date, the academy coordinator will contact you to confirm your selection to participate in the next academy. Candidates must: be at least 19 years old; live, work or have an expressed interest in the city of Woodstock; have no felony convictions; and have no criminal misdemeanor convictions within one year of application.
