Woodstock Preps For Trash Service Change

Woodstock residents will soon see a change in trash disposal companies.

The city during the week of Oct. 15 will phase out its use of Advanced Disposal for residential garbage collection and will begin using Waste Management. Residents should see a lower quarterly rate of $28.20, considerably lower than Advanced Disposal’s rate of $41.15.

The Woodstock City Council last year voted not to renew the franchise agreement for residential sanitation services with Advanced Disposal and the current agreement expires on Oct. 10.

Residents will also receive new garbage and recycling carts from Waste Management.

"I think it has gain fairly smoothly to this point," City Manager Jeff Moon said on Tuesday.  

Moon added the city requests residents not to use the new carts until next week. Moon also said residents should place their Advanced Disposal carts on the curb so the company can collect them.

Advanced Disposal will perform its last week of service to the city next week and the company will take up bins and carts as they collect trash and recyclables.  

Waste Management started delivering 96 gallon trash carts and 64-gallon recycling carts to residents this week and will continue deliveries through the week of Oct. 15. The company is expected to officially start collecting solid waste from residents during the same week.  

Customers should expect to see their first bill from Waste Management by Nov. 1 and it will include a two-and-a-half month billing cycle between October, November and December.

While most residents won’t see a change in their trash pick-up schedule, two areas of the city will see slight variations.

Residents in the Woodlands subdivision will see its collection changed from Monday to Wednesday and the schedule for citizens who resident in the Woodstock Downtown development will change from Tuesday to Thursday.

The city last year also voted not to renew the contract with Advanced Disposal for commercial solid waste removal and opted to go with an open franchise system.

Woodstock’s commercial waste disposal customers will have the opportunity to select from a list of approved haulers, which are Advanced Disposal, American Disposal Services, Inc., Commercial Disposal, North Metro Waste, Inc., Republic Services of Georgia, Waste Management of Atlanta and Waste Pro.

Moon said the business owners he's talked to "seem to be happy to have a choice now."
