1. Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi and UH Hilo Celebrate Teen's Wish for a College Tuition (kpua.net) — A Hilo campus celebration this week marked 17-year-old Pepeʻekeo resident Rancin’s wish for college tuition assistance coming true at UH Hilo. Supported by Make-A-Wish Hawaiʻi and the ELC Foundation, he presented a $10,000 check and will start a new pre-engineering pathway at UH Hilo this fall.
   

2. Prosecutors secure indictment, request accused Puna murderer Jacob Baker be detained without bail : Big Island Now (bigislandnow.com) — Hilo’s grand jury has indicted Puna resident Jacob Baker on 11 counts, including first- and second-degree murder, in connection with three killings that shook the Puna community in May. Prosecutors, seeking to hold him without bail, have a hearing set for Aug. 11 in Hilo Circuit Court.
   

3. Hurricane Fausto Becomes Category 2 Storm As It Moves Towards Hawaii (iheart.com) — Hilo residents should prepare for rough surf and possible tropical-storm conditions as Hurricane Fausto moves west and is forecast to approach the islands early next week. The Category 2 storm was more than 1,600 miles east of Hilo Thursday night, with models suggesting it will weaken but still bring hazardous surf, strong tradewinds, and potentially dangerous currents along east-facing shores.
   

4. Hurricane Fausto path map: "Increasing risk" warning issued for Hawaii (newsweek.com) — Hilo residents are being warned of an increasing risk that Hurricane Fausto will bring strong winds, rain, and high surf to Hawaii early next week, even as the storm is expected to weaken. Currently about 1,560 miles east of Hilo as a Category 2 hurricane, Fausto could prompt tropical storm watches or warnings in the coming days, so officials urge residents to closely monitor updates.
   

5. REMINDER: Candidates to speak at Democratic Party Grand Rally before votes are counted in 2026 primary elections : Big Island Now (bigislandnow.com) — Hilo voters can hear top Democratic candidates in person tonight at the Grand Rally, starting 5 p.m. at Moʻoheau Bandstand. Gov. Josh Green, Mayor Kimo Alameda, Rep. Jill Tokuda and many local candidates will speak just as primary ballots arrive in mailboxes.
