Health officials urge you to avoid brown or murky water for 48–72 hours after heavy rain because of possible pollutants and bacteria like leptospirosis, and to steer clear of drinking or wading in affected streams and ponds.

State reminds residents to apply for disaster-related unemployment assistance as deadline approaches (bigislandnow.com) — If you live in Hilo and lost work from the March storms, you can still apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance, with benefits available through October 10. The state is offering in-person help at the Hilo Claims Office on Kinoʻole Street, but applications must be filed by June 15, so gather your ID, Social Security number, and income documents soon.

UH Hilo English students turn writing skills into community action (hawaii.edu) — UH Hilo English students turned their class assignments into a hands-on project supporting Tūtū and Me Traveling Preschool, which is facing federal funding cuts. They organized a book drive, delivered 60 carefully chosen children’s books with notes, and even wrote postcards urging Mayor Kimo Alameda to back the early childhood literacy program.

4. Fight against Rapid Ohia Death advances (hawaiitribune-herald.com subscription) — Researchers based at UH Hilo and a Hilo nonprofit are at the forefront of the fight against Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, which has killed over a million trees on Hawaiʻi Island. New federal funding, state grants, and tools like beetle repellents and resistant tree research aim to protect native forests, watersheds, and cultural resources that Hilo residents depend on.
