Downtown To Transform Into 'Old Town Algonquin'
The revitalization project gets underway and Main Street from Washington Street to Railroad Street will be closed.

Downtown Algonquin will begin its transformation into the village-planned Old Town Algonquin this week. Construction will get underway on the revitalization project that is meant to make the downtown area a more pedestrian-friendly environment. As the project gets started, Main Street from Washington Street to Railroad Street will be closed beginning on Feb. 27.
The first phase of construction will last through the year and include updated utilities, street improvements and enhanced pedestrian amenities.
The revitalization project will include:

- Electrical upgrades that will provide safer electric services
- Lead pipe replaced to provide clean water to residents and businesses
- Structural building issues will be addressed
- Utility lines placed unground allowing tress to grow naturally
- Traffic calming enhancements to improve pedestrian safety
- New sidewalks to improve walkability
- Decorative lighting and furniture to create an inviting atmosphere
Since the village completed the Route 31 Bypass, the downtown area now has less "pass-through" vehicle traffic.
"The plan promotes the expansion of Downtown streetscape improvements to adjacent blocks, while integrating pedestrian-friendly amenities along Main Street in order to capitalize on a desired transformation from an automobile dependent district to pedestrian-oriented environment," according to information posted on the village's Old Town Algonquin website.
