Learn Introductory Level Computer Skills This Summer

McHenry County College's Workforce Training Program offers the Silver Series,  a hands-on computer training for older adults, dislocated workers and others with little to no previous computer experience. The Silver Series consists of two separate courses: Welcome to the World of Computers and Welcome to Microsoft Office 2010.

The coursework provides a gentle introduction for beginners, giving personal life examples by providing a step-by-step approach that ensures student success.

Welcome to the World of Computers is a five-session course scheduled for Wednesdays, beginning July 10 and ending August 7 from 8 a.m. to noon. It's the uncomplicated way for computer novices to learn how to use computers, the Windows operating system, the Internet, email basics, and word processing using Microsoft Word 2010. The five-week course starts with elementary computer concepts and introduces basic navigation such as mousing, the cursor, the Desktop, and the taskbar.

The fundamentals of word processing are covered using Word 2010.  Then, students are introduced to basic file browsing and file management. Web browsing and web basics are explained. The course ends with a discussion of webmail, email attachments, and email security including scams, phishing, and spam. 

The fee for the World of Computers is $325. Course ID: NTC S15 001 can be used when registering. This course will be repeated from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m  on Wednesday evenings beginning August 14 through September 11. Register for the August session using course ID: NTC S15 002 to register for the course.

Welcome to Microsoft Office 2010 is an uncomplicated way to learn how to use Office 2010 for beginners. The five-week course presents a gentle introduction to the Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and covers the Windows operating system. This course reinforces learning with plenty of illustrations and practical, hands-on projects and exercises.W

Welcome to Microsoft Office 2010 is being held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, beginning on June 19 through July 24. Use Course ID: NTC S14 007 when registering.  This class is also offered during the day on Wednesdays beginning August 14 through September 11, from 8 a.m. to noon. Use course ID# NTC S14 001 to register for the daytime session in August.  Fee is $325.
