Longmeadow Parkway Will Have ‘No Significant Impact’ on Environment: Federal Highway Administration

The project will move forward.

The Federal Highway Administration has determined the Longmeadow Parkway project will have no significant impacts on the environment, which will allow local transportation officials to move forward with the long-planned project.

The Kane County Division of Transportation will now be able to focus on the next phase of development for the project, which includes preparing a detailed design, right-of-way acquisition and construction, according to a letter from the Federal Highway Administration.

The project has drawn plenty of critics over the years, including those who believe it will affect the environment, the Northwest Herald reports. But, Steve Coffinbargar, assistant director of transportation for the Kane County Division of Transportation, told the Northwest Herald the DOT has now met its “obligation to the environmental aspects associated with the project.”

The 5.6-mile, four-lane roadway runs from Huntley Road to Route 62 in Barrington Hills and would include a bridge over the Fox River. The thoroughfare passes through portions of the villages of Algonquin, Carpentersville and Barrington Hills, as well as unincorporated areas of Kane County.

Construction on a portion of the project that runs through Algonquin from Randall Road to White Chapel Lane could start as early as this spring, the Northwest Herald reports.
