Officials Laud Longmeadow Parkway at Groundbreaking Ceremony

Construction is expected to begin this spring on the long-awaited Longmeadow Parkway.

ALGONQUIN, IL - Officials in Algonquin, Carpentersville and Kane County praised progress made on the long-awaited Longmeadow Parkway during a groundbreaking ceremony Monday as construction is expected to get started this spring, the Northwest Herald reports.

The $115 million construction project will pay for a four-lane highway and toll bridge over the Fox River. The 5.6-mile roadway will connect with Huntley Road on its western end and with Route 62 on its eastern end. Federal funds will cover $14.5 million of the project’s cost while $39.4 million will come from state funds.

The roadway is meant to alleviate traffic congestion in northern Kane County and to address future growth that is expected for the area. The first phase of the project, which should get underway this spring, will run from the intersection of Huntley and Boyer roads to just west of Randall Road, according to the Northwest Herald.

“With the growth we are going to see in the next 20 years, we’re going to need this transportation corridor,” Algonquin Village President John Schmitt said at Monday’s ceremony. “If people expect us to be able to provide the services we’re providing now without increasing taxes, we need to build commerce. We need to build infrastructure to build commerce.”

Officials are hopeful new industrial and commercial tenants will be drawn to the corridor, the Daily Herald reports.

“Commerce, we have very little,” Schmitt said. “There are 1,200 acres of industrial park between Carpentersville, Huntley and Algonquin that are right along the path of Longmeadow Parkway. We’ve already had interest in Algonquin just based on showing (businesses) the plans.”
