Archdiocese Of Chicago Closing 6 Catholic Schools

The closings will occur at the conclusion of the current school year.

CHICAGO — Citing low enrollment and overall financial concerns, the Archdiocese of Chicago has announced six Catholic schools in Chicagoland are closing. The schools are slated to shutter at the conclusion of the current school year.

The schools closing, according to the Archdiocese, are:

  • Our Lady of Humility in Beach Park
  • Sts. Bruno and Richard in Chicago
  • St. Hubert in Hoffman Estates
  • St. Jerome in Chicago
  • St. Francis Borgia in Chicago
  • St. Stanislaus Kostka in Chicago

"We made these decisions with heavy hearts after months of discussions with each school," Greg Richmond, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese, said in a statement released to Patch. "We know the importance of these schools in each community. Unfortunately, the enrollment of each school is too low, and the ongoing deficits are too high. Many people have worked hard at each school to raise money and try to boost enrollment. We recognize and value those efforts but, in the end, the schools were not able to close the gaps, and they are no longer sustainable."

The Archdiocese said it will assist affected families with enrolling in another Catholic school and help teachers and staff find employment at other schools within the Archdiocese.

The closings follow trends seen throughout Chicagoland in recent years. According to a 2024 report, the Archdiocese of Chicago was running 151 Catholic schools in Cook and Lake counties.
