Charges Filed In Crash That Killed Arlington Heights Woman, Father

A 71-year-old Des Plaines man crashed his car into a building after fatally striking the pedestrians last month.

DES PLAINES, IL — A 71-year-old man has been cited following a fatal crash last month in which an Arlington Heights woman and her father were killed while walking in Des Plaines. Diomedes Morales Buncen, of Des Plaines, is accused of improper lane usage and driving upon the sidewalk following the Nov. 27 incident.

Kimberly Karsen, 42, of Arlington Heights, and Neal Greenfield, 80, of Skokie, were walking to their vehicle after exiting L & L Snack Shop, 456 E. Northwest Highway, when they were struck by Buncen and his 2007 Honda Utility.

Prior to hitting the father and daughter, Buncen was traveling eastbound on the highway in his SUV when he crossed the westbound lanes of traffic and exited the roadway. After striking the two, he crashed into a building, according to police.

Karsen and Greenfield were taken to an area hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Des Plaines police announced the charges against Buncen on Friday. His initial court date is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2023, at the Skokie Courthouse.

Investigators reviewed Buncen’s medical records and have confirmed that drugs and alcohol did not play a role in the incident. They did say Buncen currently has a medical condition. According to police, hospital officials have not commented on whether his medical condition was a contributing factor to the crash.
