Person of Interest In Recent Homicide Released Following Manhunt: Des Plaines PD

Police took a man into custody Friday night following a search near a middle school in Wheeling.

DES PLAINES, IL — A person of interest in a recent homicide, who was taken into custody following a police manhunt Friday night near a Wheeling middle school, has been released. Des Plaines police said Monday no charges have been filed in the case.

Last month, a 33-year-old Rosemont man was found dead in a car with a gunshot wound in what police believe may have been a homicide. On July 23, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of North Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found Joseph Kalamaris seated in a vehicle parked in the street with a gunshot wound. Police said family members had found Kalamaris and called 911.

During the subsequent investigation, police identified a person of interest, a Des Plaines man. Police attempted a traffic stop of the man on Willow Road Friday night, just west of the I-294 exit in Northbrook, when the vehicle fled westbound on Willow Road. Officers did not pursue the vehicle as it fled at a high rate of speed.

Wheeling police were aware of the situation and later found the vehicle in the 300 block of Mors Avenue in Wheeling after the person fled the vehicle on foot into the neighborhood near Holmes Middle School.

Residents near the school at 221 S. Wolf Road were asked by police to remain indoors during the pursuit. A perimeter was established by Wheeling and Des Plaines officers, and the man was taken into custody at 10:17 p.m. without incident. He was released from police custody on Sunday.

Police said an investigation into the July shooting continues.
