Aurora Coronavirus Cases Break 1,000 Mark; 23 Deaths

A quarter of the city's total cases have been confirmed since the start of May, according to public health data.

AURORA, IL — The city of Aurora reached a grim milestone Monday as officials confirmed 80 new cases, taking the city’s total past 1,000. A quarter of the city’s 1,056 total cases were confirmed since the start of May, according to public health data. Statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health show 264 people in the city have tested positive for the coronavirus since May 1.

The city saw its largest single-day increase in the number of cases Sunday, when 76 new cases were reported, according to statistics on the City of Aurora’s website. The city also recorded its second- and third-largest spikes over the past week, the city’s data shows.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell on Monday announced 12 Aurora residents died from coronavirus-related conditions in the past week, bringing the city’s total death toll to 23 people.

The number of confirmed cases continues to rise as testing capacity expands, with at least four testing sites now operating within Aurora.

Drive-Thru Coronavirus Test Site Opens At Chicago Premium Outlets

The state of Illinois launched a drive-thru coronavirus testing site last week at the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora, which can collect up to 600 samples daily, and VNA Health Care is offering free testing by appointment at its location on Highland Ave.

Residents can also access tests at the AMITA Health Mercy Medical Center, 1325 N. Highland Ave., and Physicians Immediate Care, 2853 Kirk Road, according to the Illinois Department of Health.

People who test positive for the coronavirus are categorized by their residence, so the city's total case count does not include everyone who tested positive at an Aurora testing site, city officials have said.
