AURORA, IL — An Aurora man who stabbed a teenage girl to death in her house in 2022 was sentenced to 44 years in prison, a Kane County judge determined.

Jose Gonzalez pled guilty to first-degree murder in the Aug. 4 death of a 17-year-old Aurora girl. Officials did not name the victim out of respect for her family, according to a news release.

On the morning of the murder about a year and a half ago, the 27-year-old man entered the teenager's bedroom, a physical struggle ensuing before he killed her by stabbing her three times, prosecutors found. The man, who was in a relationship with the victim's older sister, lived with the sisters and four other people in a residence in the 900 block of Lebanon Street.

Family members found the teen dead in her home, Patch reported. Gonzalez was on parole at the time of the murder, officials said.

In addition to his prison term, which he is required by Illinois law to serve in full, Gonzalez must register as a violent offender against youth. He receives credit for the 496 days served in the Kane County jail.

"Despite their grief, the victim’s family members have been a constant voice for her since this violent act was committed, and they have remained staunch advocates for her in the face of this terrible and needless loss," Kane County Assistant State's Attorney Christine Bayer said in a statement. "I hope this resolution brings them some peace."
