Aurora Police Flooded With Handmade Cards, Food After Shooting
Police thanked community members for "feeding our bodies, feeding our souls" in the wake of Friday's deadly shooting.

AURORA, IL — Days after a mass shooting in Aurora that killed five people and left five officers injured, the police department is still being flooded with homemade cards, crayon drawings of police officers and donations of food from throughout the community. "Our officers, dispatchers, and support personnel have been working nonstop throughout the weekend to bring aid to our community, and the kindness returned to us has been felt at every level," the police department wrote in a Facebook post.

"Thank you for risking your life to save us," the handwritten cards from local students read.
Student Leo Solache wrote, "Thank you for protecting us. You all are very brave." He added, "I want to be a S.W.A.T. when I grow up."

Students in West Aurora District 129 and Holy Angels Catholic School were put on soft lockdown when the shooting took place.

Police thanked the "hard-working men and women of Aurora" after receiving donations of pizza, chicken, donuts, sandwiches, cookies, water, soda, and other snacks.

On their Facebook page, Aurora police thanked the community for "feeding our bodies, feeding our souls."

They added, "In this moment of appreciation, we would like to offer our continued condolences to those in our community who have lost friends, colleagues, and loved ones. Our hearts remain with you as we all work toward eventual healing."
Four of the five police officers who were shot had been released from local hospitals as of Saturday afternoon. Officials said the fifth officer is in good condition and that they are "hopeful for his release soon."
