Standoff On Aurora's East Side Ends With Arrest: Police
Update: The man left the home he barricaded himself in after speaking with crisis negotiators for more than 40 minutes, Aurora police said.
AURORA, IL — A standoff that lasted more than seven hours Wednesday morning on Aurora's east side came to an end when a man left a home he was in and was arrested, according to police.
The man had barricaded himself inside a home in the 500 block of Bangs Street just after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman said Wednesday. A woman, who police believe was the man’s mother, was inside the home at the time, but officers got her to come out without incident, Ziman said.
Once the man was inside the home alone and no one else was in danger, officers tried to "slow down" the situation and "wait it out," Ziman said. The Aurora Police Department’s crisis negotiators and special response team then spent almost five hours trying to make contact with the man in the home, Ziman said.

Negotiations "took a positive turn" just before 9 a.m. when officers spoke to the man and his girlfriend on a three-way phone call for about 40 minutes, convincing him to exit the home peacefully, Ziman said.
"This is a scenario that may have had a very different outcome but for the response of our officers, our special response team, our negotiators as well," Ziman said. "Their training and ultimately their patience brought this to a very peaceful resolution."

Police were called to the 500 block of Bangs Street early Wednesday morning when a resident reported shots were fired, police said. The caller later said the man was using a gun to break out windows on a vehicle in their driveway, but by the time police responded, the man had barricaded himself in a nearby home, according to police.
City officials issued an alert to residents just after 5 a.m., urging anyone in the area of the standoff to remain in their home until further notice. Police said they also evacuated some residents from nearby homes.
