City Council OKs Purchase To Replace APD Car Destroyed In Protest

AURORA, IL — Aurora aldermen unanimously approved a request Tuesday to buy a new police vehicle after one was damaged beyond repair by protesters at the end of May. The Aurora City Council during its online meeting Tuesday authorized the purchase of a 2020 Ford Utility Police Interceptor from Currie Motors in Frankfort for $37,312.

Hundreds demonstrated that afternoon outside the Aurora Police Department headquarters and the Chicago Premium Outlets before marching to City Hall. The demonstration turned violent about an hour after protesters reached downtown, with police firing tear gas at people throwing bottles.

Vianney Huerta, 19, of Montgomery, was charged June 5 with arson and criminal damage after prosecutors alleged she set fire to an Elgin police SUV in a parking lot on East New York Street. Under mutual-aid agreements, the city of Aurora is not responsible for replacing the destroyed Elgin police vehicle, according to officials.

Alex Alexandrou, the city’s chief management officer, said in June that officials would seek restitution from anyone who is convicted of destroying the Aurora police vehicle.
