That excitement continued last weekend when members of the East Aurora High School Cats Team braved icy waters for a great cause during the annual Special Olympics Illinois Torch Run Polar Plunge. The team gathered at Loon Lake at Silver Springs State Park in Yorkville alongside other teams willing to take the plunge to raise funds for Special Olympics athletes.

Several East Aurora High School team members participated, joined by Superintendent Dr. Robert Halverson and Board of Education Vice President Saul Olivas, all proudly representing the district’s commitment to supporting athletes of all abilities.

The Cats Team plunged alongside many community partners, including the Aurora Police Department, whose team earned the event’s “Top Cop” trophy for their fundraising efforts.

As the district looks ahead, excitement is building for the upcoming Special Olympics season. Regional competitions will take place May 2–3 at Marmion Academy, where East Aurora athletes will compete and showcase their hard work and dedication. The Transition Program will compete on Saturday, May 2, while students from across the district will compete on Sunday, May 3.

Staff, families, and community members are encouraged to come out and cheer on our incredible athletes. Additional information will be shared soon for those who would like to attend and support the team.

From statewide recognition to freezing plunges and upcoming competitions, East Aurora continues to demonstrate the power of inclusion, teamwork, and community spirit.
