Fire Guts Recycling Plant, Stalls Traffic In Aurora
Residents were urged to shut their windows and turn off air conditioners due to heavy smoke.
AURORA, IL — The Aurora Fire Department said no one was injured Tuesday evening in a fire that gutted a building in the 600 block of Spruce Street. Firefighters battled the blaze in the recycling plant for more than an hour, urging residents who lived nearby to turn off their air conditioners and close their windows due to the heavy smoke.
The fire, which started around 5:30 pm., caused the roof of the brick building to collapse, followed by an exterior wall shortly after. Firefighters quickly went into defensive mode and were able to get the blaze under control, but heavy smoke caused traffic delays for commuters.
Just before 8 a.m., fire officials said residents who live nearby were safe to reopen their windows and turn their air conditioners back on. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
