AURORA, IL — An Aurora man was found guilty of firing the gun that killed a 32-year-old man two years ago. It's believed to be a gang-related shooting, officials said.

Daniel Aguirre, of the 800 block of South Loucks Street, was convicted of first-degree murder after a week-long trial. He was charged in January 2022.

The case stems from Jan. 15, 2021, when, just before 5 p.m., he and co-defendant Ivan Valles were driving together in the 300 block of South Hinman Street. Aguirre, now 25, exited the passenger side, ran through a yard to the back of 311 S. Spencer St., and fired multiple shots that killed Fernando Carapia, who was in the yard, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.

"The murder of Fernando Carapia was most likely the result of senseless gang bravado," Assistant State's Attorney Lori Anderson said in a statement. "To say Fernando was in the wrong place at the wrong time minimizes the absurdity of the violent gang activity that continues to plague the city of Aurora and its residents."

Aguirre is scheduled to appear in court for motions and sentencing June 14. He is facing a sentence between 45 years and life in prison. The sentence will include a mandatory 25-year enhancement since he fired the gun that killed Carapia, officials said.

The man remains in custody at the Kane County jail, where he has been held in lieu of $1 million bail since his arrest. Judge John Barsanti revoked his bond upon conviction.
