Illinois City Among 25 Safest In America: Ranking

Illinois's second-largest city's ranking jumped 12 spots compared to last year.

AURORA, IL — Kane County is home to one of the top 25 safest cities in the United States, according to a new survey.

WalletHub compared 182 cities across the country to compile its annual list of safest cities, and Aurora came in 25th place. Last year, Illinois's second-largest city ranked 37, Patch reported.

It's one of only two Illinois cities that made the list. Chicago came in at 140, three spots below New York City.

To come to its conclusion, the personal finance website took a look at 150 of the most populated U.S. cities plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state. Three key factors were compared — home and community safety, financial safety and natural disaster risk — and evaluated using 41 metrics such as number of mass shootings, sex offenders per capita and law-enforcement employees per capita.

Aurora's total score came out to 80.63. Comparatively, Nashua, New Hampshire, which ranked first as safest, received a total score of 86. St. Louis came in last place with a score of 44.88.
