Man Fatally Shot By Aurora Police ID'd: Coroner

The Kane County Coroner's Office attributed the 27-year-old man's preliminary cause of death to gunshot wounds, officials said.

AURORA, IL — The Kane County Coroner's Office has identified the man who was fatally shot Jan. 21 by Aurora police near the Fox River in downtown Aurora.

The man was Temesgen Welendreyas, a 27-year-old Aurora resident. The coroner conducted an autopsy Jan. 23 and attributed the preliminary cause of his death to gunshot wounds. Toxicology samples were collected and sent for further forensic analysis.

Aurora police responded at about 12:35 p.m. to the 300 block of South Broadway after receiving a 911 call about a battery and a person with a weapon. Responding officers located a man who was barricaded and armed with a weapon, Patch reported.

The man displayed a knife when approached by police, and officers fired at him, officials said. The man sustained at least one gunshot wound, the Aurora Police Department revealed at the time.

The Fox Valley Major Crimes Task Force is handling the ongoing investigation into the use of officers' force. Its findings will be presented to the Kane County State's Attorney's Office for an independent review.

"Every case involving the use of deadly force by a police officer must be carefully and thoroughly investigated," State's Attorney Jamie Mosser wrote in a news release. "In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, as well as the civil rights of those involved, no additional information will be released at this time."
