AURORA, IL — A flight instructor and student are lucky to be alive after having to make an emergency landing during takeoff at Aurora Municipal Airport Thursday morning. The training plane was 5,000 feet into its takeoff when the pilot declared an emergency and landed the plane in a nearby field.

Aurora police say the single-engine plane experienced a mechanical problem and tried to turn back toward the runway, but was forced to land in a bean field.

According to Clayton Muhammed, spokesperson for the City of Aurora, emergency crews got to the scene to find that neither the pilot nor passenger needed medical attention. The plane sustained minimal damage and was taxied back to the hanger, Muhammed said.
