Video Of Fatal Police-Involved Shooting In Aurora Released

Police have released surveillance video of an officer-involved shooting that left Santiago Calderon, 36, dead.

AURORA, IL — Aurora Police have released a video and photo stills of the March 22 police-involved shooting that left Santiago Calderon, 36, of Aurora, dead and two officers injured. The video, just over three minutes long, includes citizen footage, images, and surveillance footage from a bank near the intersection of Galena Blvd. and Downer Pl., where police say gunfire was exchanged between Calderon and investigators.

Police had pulled Calderon over for an "equipment violation" at around 9:45 p.m. on March 22 after he was seen leaving what police called a "known gang house" in the 200 block of Galena Blvd. Calderon, who was on parole for a previous charge, then allegedly fired shots at the officers.

Police say Calderon then fled eastbound and hit a parked car at Galena and Broadway before getting out of his vehicle and fleeing on foot.

Calderon then exchanged gunfire with the two special investigators in a LaSalle St. parking lot between Galena and Downer, police say. Calderon was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire, in which one officer was reportedly grazed with a bullet and another officer injured his shoulder.

Police say they approached Calderon to give medical attention after he was hit by gunfire and found a gun at his side.

Aurora Police said of the video, "Because the surveillance videos, at times, are difficult to see, we took some screen shots and highlighted key moments in the encounter. Please remember these are taken from bank surveillance cameras and appear 'jumpy' Also, the ATM and Bank Parking Lot cameras are not synchronized so there are some minor discrepancies in timing."

In a March press conference following the shooting, Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman said the investigators were not equipped with body cams and their vehicle did not have a dash cam.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is currently investigating the shooting.
