Barrington High School Sports Teams Finish Spring Season
Part two of a multipart series recapping a busy sports session for Barrington during the 2011 spring season.
Boysβ Lacrosse
The Broncos, led by junior attacker Austin Rich (39 goals and 38 assists, giving him 77 points for the year), finished with a record of 11-6 (8-2 in conference). Barrington would end its regular season with a loss at Lyons Township (6-2), and then later, in eerie similarities, would suffer the same fate to end its playoff run during the second round of the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association.Β
After the Broncos defeated Evanston 8-5 at Barrington Community Stadium in the first round of the playoffs, making up for an earlier loss to Evanston (7-8), the Broncos were unable to find the goals to rebound against Lyons, too. The Broncos, averaging nine goals a game, were held to just two goals against the Lionsβ defense. Lyons would lose in its semifinals match to eventual state champion New Trier, its seventh straight state title.

Girlsβ Badminton
Barrington senior Hannah Gross, who ended the Filliesβ eight-year hiatus from the IHSA state meet, qualified for the tournament at Eastern Illinois University with her fourth-place finish at the Park Ridge sectional. Unfortunately, Gross couldnβt build on the momentum and lost her first match to Yorkβs Torrie Graham (21-8, 21-16). Gross would manage a victory over West Chicagoβs Michelle Lopez (21-15, 21-14) in the first round of the consolation bracket, but that was as far as she would get. She lost in the next round to Jill Trumpey of Tinley Park. New Trierβs Mari Georgiadis would end the tournament as the top singles players, while MSL rivals Palatine would have the top doubles players in Maggie Van Grondelle and Tomoyo Tsurumi.

The talented MSL had two teams finish in the top 10 for team play, as Buffalo Grove finished seventh and Palatine High School tied with four other teams for eighth.
Boysβ Baseball
Broncosβ baseball (7-28) started the season in a slump, losing the first 10 games, but began to play well down the stretch, giving hope for the playoffs. The Broncos earned the 18th seed in their own sectional and would need to beat 16th-seeded Lake Zurich to be able to host a home game in the stateβs 4A tournament. Barrington took its hot bats to Lake Zurich, and although the Broncos jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, the Bears were able to battle back thanks to the long ball.
Despite good pitching from senior Greg Gerrard, Lake Zurich managed to hit four home runs against Bronco pitching, with none more devastating then the walk-off by Sean Eder (his second of the day), which gave the Bears a dramatic 9-8 win.
Girlsβ Water Polo
Many outside the Fillies locker room probably thought Barrington was not going to go far in the IHSA playoffs, even if they were swimming in their own pool for the sectional. The Fillies, playing as the sixth seed in the Barrington Sectional, were quick to silence some of their early critics with an overtime win over St. Viator (7-6). Barrington didnβt stop there, managing a defensive 5-3 win over MSL divisional foe Schaumburg in the sectional semifinals. That setup the Filliesβ sectional championship game against nemesis Fremd.
Barringtonβs βCinderella-likeβ run through the playoffs would hit a snag facing the lady Vikes, a team that also had been playing some really good polo during the IHSA playoffs. Fremd, averaging nearly 17 goals a game in its previous two playoff contests, continued that trend against Barrington by putting up 14 goals against the Fillies in the championship game. The numerous goals given up by Barrington were a sharp contrast to the 4.5 goals per game the Fillies had allowed during the playoffs. Barrington, averaging six goals a game in the playoffs were unable to find the back of the net against the Fremd defense and lost 14-0. Fremdβs magic would run out in the next round with a loss to Mother McAuley.
