Your 2018 Beverly Art Walk Survival Guide
Find everything you'll need to know to prepare for Saturday's Beverly Art Walk at venues throughout Beverly and Morgan Park.

CHICAGO, IL — One of the best yearly events in any Chicago neighborhood is this weekend as the Beverly Area Arts Alliance's Beverly Art Walk takes shape at numerous stops in Beverly/Morgan Park on Saturday. It is the fifth annual event, which features artists offering a variety of forms and coming from near and far.
While many local businesses transform into art galleries for the day, Beverly Art Walk co-founder Sal Campbell says a big part of the event are the "pop-up" galleries that are created just for Art Walk day, of which there will be six on Saturday.
"We'll have clusters of venues everywhere," Campbell said. "Every year, the pop-up galleries are the most fun because they tend to change based on the different spaces and what's available."

Highlights
via Beverly Area Arts Alliance
- Beverly Art Walk Children’s Park & Art Exhibition (noon to 5 p.m., Clissold Elementary School): Beverly artist Cindy Wirtz and Clissold and Kellogg Elementary student and family volunteers will host a variety of children’s art activities, including kite making, creations from recycled materials, origami peace cranes, and more. Live music, storytelling, a food truck, the Peaceful Playground, and an interactive public art project will all be featured. Attendees will also watch as award-winning sand sculptor Brian Turnbough creates a 4-ton sand sculpture celebrating the Beverly Art Walk. Members of the Beverly Chicago Children’s Choir will perform at 2 p.m.
- Two Uprising Handmade Markets (Olivia’s Garden, 10730 S. Western Ave. and The Vineyard, 2115 W. 95th St.): makers and craft vendors will sell a variety of handmade items—from jewelry and ceramics to all-natural bath and body works—in the parking lot just south of Olivia’s Garden and at The Vineyard, Barraco’s new banquet space on 95th Street.
- Chicago’s vibrant music scene will be showcased at Horse Thief Hollow and 95th Street main stages for featured acts, plus nearly 30 local music performances throughout the day and the neighborhood, including acoustic, classical quartets, blues, rap, and rock-n-roll. The 95th Street Music Stage will include DJ Ruta Spencer spinning tunes and feature performances by The Lonesome Organist, The Flips and Sanctified Grumblers.
- Artist Elaine Miller’s artwork, inspired by the nearby Dan Ryan Woods, will be displayed on a massive billboard in Beverly on 101st and Western Ave. “Remnant- September” is part of a three-month series of billboards that subvert the usual purpose of a billboard to advertise. Miller’s unique billboards, each unadorned with any accompanying text or explanations, are intended to be a respite from advertising and a gentle prod to viewers to notice natural beauty and perhaps question the onslaught of advertising they experience in their daily lives.
- Artist Davis McCarty’s sculpture, “Quantum Me”— (aka the "Beverly Bean") that changes color based on the location of the viewer, the weather and time of day—is on display at 99th Street and Walden Parkway. The biggest investment in public art in the 19th ward, the sculpture was partly funded by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, which launched its “50X50 Neighborhood Arts Project” in 2017.
- Six pop-up galleries throughout The Walk, each with a unique style and personality, will feature exciting work from emerging and accomplished artists in a wide range of styles and mediums. They include Planet 104, Boxcar Camp, Surface+Texture, Fabula, UpFall and BluLady. In Planet 104, nine artists express their idiosyncratic artistic visions from other-worldly to intensely personal. In Boxcar Camp, a collection of artists, curators and art lovers from Blue Island and their artistic cohorts create a fun and interactive arts experience. In Surface+Texture, a photographer and a multimedia artist explore the aesthetic and tactile nature of visual compositions and repurposed mundane objects. In Fabula (Latin for “story”), the mysterious, evocative and allegorical works of seven artists are on view. At UpFall Art Station, students, faculty and alumni from Saint Xavier University merge their talents in the act of creating a public art exhibition. BluLady features a combination of local and Cleveland-based artists in a variety of mediums.
For The Kids
There will be an Art Walk Scavenger Hunt for kids that can be picked up at the Sutherland I Modanarri Festival or the Clissold Children's Park.
"This is designed to give kids something fun to do as their parents move from site to site," said Corinne Rose, a Beverly Area Arts Alliance board member. "Small prizes will be provided for those who complete most items on the list."
The check out point for the scavenger hunt is the Alliance information table at the Uprising Vineyard table.
How It All Began
The Beverly Art Walk formed as a result of a 2014 meeting between co-founders Sal Campbell and Monica Wilczak. Both longtime neighborhood residents who share a common hairdresser, the two were introduced and the first walk was in the plans shortly after that. Street Closures
Walden Parkway will be closed just south of 99th Street for a festival occurring on the street there. Other thoroughfares will remain open to traffic as art walkers will be on the sidewalks.
Trolleys
Trolleys will be running throughout the neighborhood to guide visitors along the route. Art walkers can ride them for free.
DUI Patrol
While art and wine (or other forms of alcohol) often go hand in hand, it's important to not drink and drive on Art Walk day or any day. Also, the Chicago Police Department plans to deploy their "DUI Saturation Patrol" in the neighborhood beginning at 7 p.m. Designate a sober driver, take the trolleys or walk. Have Fun!
Save for the South Side Irish Parade, no neighborhood event brings more visitors than the Beverly Art Walk, which has become the most hyped local fall event since it began in 2014. Come for the great artwork, stay for everything else our community offers and come back again and again.
