• Inmate, 10 Officers Suffer Smoke Inhalation After Fire At Cook County Jail: Report (patch.com) — Smoke from a mattress fire at Cook County Jail led to the evacuation of a fifth-floor tier and sent one inmate and 10 corrections officers to the hospital for smoke inhalation. All were treated and released, but the incident underscores ongoing safety concerns at the Chicago-area facility that houses many of the city's detainees.
   

• 14-Year-Old Girl Shot In Face, Chest: Chicago Police (patch.com) — Overnight gunfire in Chicago's Austin neighborhood left a 14-year-old girl critically wounded after she was shot in the face and chest near the 300 block of South Laramie Avenue. Police found a vehicle riddled with bullets and rushed her to Stroger Hospital, where detectives are now working to piece together what happened.
   

• Chicago community college will train midwives to help 'birthing individuals' (thecollegefix.com) — A new midwifery training program at Kennedy-King College in Chicago aims to expand culturally responsive care for Black mothers and infants while preparing students for Illinois midwife licensure. The initiative, led by the Black Midwifery Collective, has drawn both praise for addressing maternal health inequities and criticism for its emphasis on racism and ideology in the curriculum.
