Cary Man Convicted In Crash That Killed Cop 'Likely' To Be Released This Year: Report

Officer Robert Fryc, 43, died one year ago while driving to work when his car was struck by another that had veered into oncoming traffic.

ROLLING MEADOWS, IL — Christopher Lopez, the Cary man convicted in the February 2025 crash that killed a Glenview police officer, might soon be out of jail.

Officer Robert Fryc, 43, died from injuries sustained in a crash that occurred while he was driving to work and his vehicle was struck by a car that had veered into oncoming traffic.

ABC7 is reporting Lopez pleaded guilty on one count of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle, for which a judge sentenced him to three years at the Illinois Department of Corrections, to be served at 50 percent. According to court records obtained by the media outlet, he was given credit for the 355 days he has already served, which means Lopez will "likely" be released by the end of the year.

Following the crash, Lopez was arrested for suspicion of driving while under the influence. He was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital for further DUI testing.

Fryc, who lived in Cary at the time of his death and Arlington Heights prior to that, left behind a wife, family, friends and a heartbroken community.

"Officer Fryc was more than just a colleague," former Glenview Police Chief William Fitzpatrick said at the time. “He was a part of our family and a part of this community. Our hearts are broken by his passing, and our priority now is to support his loved ones and our department as we grieve this unimaginable loss together."
